Well in D2 they introduced ladder seasons, where everyone had to start over (generally these happened about every year). Everyone has to make a new character, and you start to play through the game again. There was a ladder which ranked the top 100 characters (iirc) for each class for both normal characters and hardcore characters (hardcore character are one that you can no longer play if they die). The ranking was based on the current amount of experience points a character had. In essence it was a race to level your character up to 99 before everyone else. When the ladder season ended, all the ladder characters were moved to nonladder including their items, and people started over again making a new ladder character.

A nonladder character cannot join/play in the same game as ladder characters. The point of the ladder was to start people out on an even playing ground, as well as to flush out the mass buildup of items to reinvigorate the game economy.

I'm actually not even sure D3 will have ladder/nonladder (I don't recall hearing about that), but if they do, basically this thread is just to give people an idea of what others are going to do. Some people might play ladder to begin with, but eventually just play nonladder characters as it is a major time investment to create new characters every year.

I hope that was a good enough explanation... if I left anything out, someone please fill in the blanks

Looks like you just about covered everything, aside from special runewords for ladder and such. As well as being able to cube your runes all the way to zod.

I agree with you Redeemer it is a major time investment for making a new character each year however, one thing that can determine if you want to play Ladder is how much time are you going to devote to the game itself.

All of my time. Every day. Because you can bet your sweet ass there's going to be crap tons of uber rare ladder only items, that will be worth hundreds of dollars once transfered to non-ladder!
